NMREC License Renewal Requirements
From the New Mexico Real Estate Commission (NMREC):
“All active and inactive associate brokers and qualifying brokers shall successfully complete thirty (30) credit hours of continuing education in courses approved by the commission during each 3-year licensing cycle. The only exception to this requirement are brokers exempted from continuing education by virtue of being sixty-five (65) years of age with twenty (20) years continuous licensure. However, the exemption does not apply to qualifying brokers who are required to successfully complete a four (4) hour qualifying broker refresher course as a condition of license renewal regardless of age or years of licensure.”

Commission Eliminates Mandatory Exam Effective July 1, 2011:
The New Mexico Real Estate Commission has voted to eliminate the Mandatory Course examination effective July 1, 2011. Brokers whose licenses are due for renewal after July 1 will not be required to take and pass the Mandatory Course examination as a condition of license renewal. However, brokers will still be required to take the 8 hour Mandatory Course every three years.
It is the responsibility of the licensee to maintain his/her education history. However, you may contact the Commercial Association of REALTORS® NM (CARNM) if you would like a 3-year history of courses taken through CARNM and/or the local CCIM chapter. All other education records are maintained by individual course providers and should be contacted directly for education queries.
Don’t Forget Real Estate Licensing Changes Are Effective July 1
Real Estate Broker Licensing legislation, SB 105, was signed into law and goes into effect July 1, 2011. The bill:
- eliminates the existing exemption from continuing education for brokers who are at least 65 years of age with 20 years of continuous licensure, while allowing those brokers already exempt on the July 1, 2011 effective date of the Act to remain exempt;
- permits a broker licensed by another state to engage in real estate activity in New Mexico under a transaction-specific written agreement with a New Mexico licensed broker executed prior to that activity, and provided that all New Mexico laws are obeyed;
- Increases the criminal penalty for unlicensed real estate brokerage activity from a misdemeanor to a fourth-degree felony; and
- Requires fingerprinting of applicants for New Mexico broker’s licenses.
- For more information on the license law changes, visit the New Mexico Real Estate Commission’s website.
